Nerd Alert: Development Update 1.3.0

Let’s get right into it. We’ve rolled out some great things since the last release.

Checkout

You may have noticed your checkout happens in a matter of seconds. Huzzah! We worked with the team over at WooCommerce to make this happen. Times will vary obviously, but in my testing I was able to checkout with 300 products in less than 7 seconds.

Weekly Pickups

Every Wednesday you will receive an email with all of your pickups for the week. On top of that, you can also navigate to your Account Dashboard at any time and see your pickups from last week, this week, and next week. This was a big feature that we wanted to implement, and we’re thrilled to have it out in the wild. Let me know if there are any issues with it. In the mean time, head over to your Dashboard to check it out.

Cover Zooms

You can now click on covers in the shop pages, single product pages, and your Dashboard and we’ll display the cover full size on your screen. Whenever your cursor turns into a magnifying glass, you can zoom in on the cover.

Open Graphs

We’ve implemented it, so what the heck is Open Graphs? Now an image will be displayed when sharing a link via social media or text messages on most devices. Text your buddy a link to the next issue of Batman and they’ll automatically see the cover on their phone.

Behind the Scenes Things

We quickly outgrew the server we were on. There are currently 6000+ products available on modernagereader.com. That’s over 6000 individual pages and 12,000 images created in less than a month. We run weekly queries to get your purchases ordered from Diamond, set stock on items, set items out of stock, and to send your weekly pickup email. To combat our growth, and to make the site more future proof, we took a few steps:

  1. Moved to a more powerful server with more resources.
  2. More and better caching.
  3. Storing and serving images from Amazon S3.

Version 1.3.0 – February 24, 2017

Aside from everything above, and several backend fixes, here’s everything else in version 1.3.0.

ADDED

  • Covers link to full size covers in lightbox
  • Thumbnail fallback image if cover doesn’t exist
  • ‘Purchased’ tag is now on Featured Books on the home page
  • Diamond and stock number to listings (Admin only)

FIXED

  • Cart displays medium size images
  • Show new PREVIEWS on the first of the month, not after the first. Duh.

REMOVED

  • Image sizes created – We now only create a 300px wide image from the original
  • Removed srcset for delivering of responsive images

So that’s it! If you have any suggestions for features or find any bugs, feel free to leave a comment here or shoot me an email at jake@designcrumbs.com.
