Not as many this week as I would like but between accounting and the catalog closing, I’m a little pressed for time.
I continued last week’s DC focus by reading Low, Low, Woods #1. The book wasn’t bad, just not as good as I felt the plot could have been. The dialog seems a little broken, like the writer was distracted or something. Maybe the editorial step in the publication process was missed or a thought changed. I was intrigued by the mystery at the theatre and the weird animals on the trip home. The coal mine story in the middle was okay, but the last page fit none of the previous pieces. Yes, you are correct. There were too many things going on in just 22 pages.
Dead Body Road: Bad Blood #1 is a follow up story to one I read back in 2013. For those who do not know the first story, these are 6 issue mini series that are very violent revenge plots or crime stories. The first one from 2013 was a man getting revenge for the death of his wife. This one, Bad Blood, is an ex-military woman basically punishing those people trying to hunt down her brother. Cover art by Matteo Scalera always draws me in but the writing on these is just done well. Crime fans of books like Criminal should give these a try.
Today’s extra: a children’s book that I ordered for the coming store. There Might Be Lobsters! is a hardcover picture book by Carolyn Crimi that just made me smile. A story about a young girl’s dog who is afraid of the water because ‘There Might Be Lobsters!’. The character drawing are well done and the dog (and his stuffy toy) seem to be intended to substitute for a small child who is afraid of the water. A wave, a heroic rescue, and everything turns out well. I would display it this week but I read it Saturday and it was purchased before closing. More coming soon.
