February catalog being active, I moved into reading a few issues a day again. Unfortunately accounting, website issues and some new recipes got in the way, but here you go. I read a few back to backs this week to help close the gap.
Not All Robots is surprisingly good. Isaac Asimov would have given a few more details but the two sided emotional conflict in the book is actually well done. Transferring the weight and drudgery of a daily grind to a robot is a smart idea. The supporting characters, both robots and humans, are well balanced yet still are slight enough where real life characterization grounded me as I read. Robot co-workers make comments like robots not people; while the people still complain like people. Scott Maki, if you are not reading this, please do.
Catwoman Lonely City. The book made me a little mad. Midlife crisis Catwoman does not look or act like the middle aged Selina Kyle I projected in my head. She seems more like a woman who ran a diner in Gotham rather than a beta level DC vigilante. The magazine size was the right choice and the pencils were good, but a splash of vivid color would give the book a little more visual depth The tone is very uninvolving, the plot handles the depression, but the constant use of orange coloring became almost annoying. The pigments should should anchor us emotionally not put us to sleep. I will read issue two but I do hope for better heroine definition and a little optimism to enter the book soon.
Last Flight Out wins the week. Three issues in and I still feel like this is a screenplay ready to move to the small screen. The climate change commentary reflects our social reactions to global warming and layers through each issue without hitting you on the head. The action drama, family drama and global collapse pieces all move in and out fairly well. I look forward to seeing how this one goes.
