Still managed to get a few things done this past week, even with the catalog prep. Rather than cover the comics this week, I am going to talk a little about the books for children at the end of the list. The more we work on the bookstore, the more I have to become acquainted with the product and feel I should include the audience in the posts as well. I will add the books to the store later in the week but want to get the post done in a timely manner.
We Will Rock Our Classmates is the second picture book about a young T. Rex named Penelope. I read the first one a few months back and thought I should mention these as they are very well done. Combining dinosaurs, going to school, and early childhood relationships in a story is tough. Both books do a nice job with the classmate issue but I like that they keep it interesting for young girls. It would be easy to shift to the action side and cater to the boys but it is refreshing to see the main character be a girl. I do suggest reading the first story We Don’t Eat Our Classmates before this one, just to be familiar with the direction the author is heading.
Moo Dog is a good level one reader. This is especially true for kids who love to make sounds like, you guessed it, mooing. The vocabulary is good reinforcement for emerging readers, and is fun enough that giggles might make focusing a little hard. The lesson is important though. A dog mooing, and being told he is not a cow, convinces the other animals that his being a dog is really irrelevant to how he feels. In the end, even the strongest opposition has something different to say than when the book started.
