This week I continued to burn down the backlog a little. The number one spot went to Something is Killing The Children but it is a little unfair as this should have been released as a Original Graphic Novel (OGN). The issues simply are too short and I would prefer to have more each time rather than a 22 page tease. Do not get me wrong, love it as it is, I just need two at a time to be happy.

Firefly gets the second spot. It is just streaming show audience appeasement but I pay the $4 and smile every time. It is good to see a book hit double digit issues and still be true to characters, More so with so much definition in other forms of media. I am hoping for Mal to shoot a few more people though.

Berserker… The book I want to drop but still pick up. I hate time and dimensional portal stories but the humility in this keeps me picking up the next one. The homeless man to barbarian language barrier is well done but it needs to go somewhere in issue 4.

I could go one but most of this list stays. Feel free to ask questions…

  • Berserker Unbound #3
  • E-Ratic #1
  • Dryad #7
  • Inkblot #4
  • Black Widow #4
  • Justice League Endless Winter #1
  • Giga #1
  • Batman Catwoman #1
  • Something Is Killing The Children #5
  • Fantastic Four Antithesis #2
  • Spider-Woman #3
  • Firefly #17

This Thanksgiving gave me a nice reading window that allowed me to get through a few more things from the growing pile. While I cooked a traditional holiday meal, I was thankful for both the additional reading time, and some decent writing, Since I had a larger pool to pick from, I will talk about three items rather than just one.

Black Widow continues to keep my attention. I have read many Widow stories but this one has proven the journey so far is worth the $12. Issue 3 transitions the story in the previous two, revealing the antagonists and triggering the projected direction. This continues in my top 10, so you may want to grab issue 1 and give it a go.

Next is Stillwater #3. The story is about a guy returning to his home town where native resident are resurrected if they die. The town hides this fact even to the extent of killing strangers if they find out. Issue 3 reveals that it is not just the people that resurrect, but the vegetation and animals as well. Will this guy get away or die trying?

Autumnal #3 continues the story of a wayward woman and her daughter as they settle into their new home in the town of Autumnal. Not unlike Stillwater, the town has something to hide and our main character is just getting hints that something is amiss. The plot does focus on the woman trying to change her life in hopes her daughter does not live the same path she had. The discussion of removing a tattoo gave some dimension to the character and still relates to the plot, which is a nice change.

  • Pandemica #2
  • Once and Future #6
  • Berserker Unbound #2
  • Dead Day #3
  • Autumnal #3
  • Death of Nancy Drew #6
  • Stillwater #3
  • Champions #1
  • Spider Woman #2
  • Drawing Blood #4
  • Hawkeye Freefall #6
  • Dryad #6
  • Inkblot #3
  • Black Widow #3
  • Captain America #19

Surprises and let downs this week. I really was looking forward to Strange Academy and held it for last just so i could spend the time. Maybe it was the competition this week but it definitely did not capture the top spot. Black Cat and Red Mother both stayed strong but Firefly and Stillwater kind of ran past the rest of the list.

Stillwater kept my attention and made me wish I had a few more pages to read when I was done. Firefly continued to feed my love of the adventure and the characters while still adding to the new things we learned in the past few. Firefly is the better ongoing book but Stillwater is the best issue this week. I would be happy to another of both though.

  • Black Cat #9
  • Red Mother #4
  • Widowmakers #1
  • Captain America #18
  • Stillwater #2
  • Undiscovered Country #2
  • Firefly #16
  • Crone #5
  • Strange Academy #4
  • Death of Nancy Drew #5

This week was clean up week. I tried to finish some things I lost track of and start a few that I normally would not have added. Thanos, Ninja & Robots and Strayed both all middle of the road and I just kept putting them off. None of them is anything I would suggest you step out and purchase but would be a good barrow if you have an open spot.

Rescue is the second part of the Ironman 2020 tie in featuring Pepper Potts. Worth the trouble if your a fan of her but only detail fill in if your in it for the 2020 story. It gets the number one spot but only because Pepper is easy to write.

Engine Ward and Devil’s Red Bride will get a second issue but neither would make the cut if I was keeping them. Space versus content and I doubt I would read either again.

  • Thanos #5
  • Strayed #3
  • Rescue #2
  • Ninja & Robots #2
  • Engine Ward #1
  • Devil’s Red Bride #1
  • Death of Nancy Drew #4

  • Unkindness of Ravens #2
  • Autumnal #2
  • Jessica Jones Blind Spot #6
  • Mandrake The Magician #1
  • We Live #1
  • A Man Among Ye #3

This week is a short list due to the catalog being due and the October catalog needing to be loaded. I will say that I enjoyed all of these. This week’s pick is Pulp.

  • Pulp HC – I like this because it is held in a time usually skipped in periodical format. We occasionally get a 1920’s story usually about prohibition but rarely a 1930’s story. Even more a look back to the fiction writers of the Pulp era of writing. Part western, part waning years of life, but all Pulp.
  • Stillwater #1
  • Unkindness of Ravens #1
  • The Autumnal #1

This week I have to pick Cimmerian Red Nails #1. It was nice to be taken a little closed to the late 1970’s in this issue. It gave us the flavor of Robert E. Howard’s writing and combined all the elements we have come to hope for in a barbarian story. The girl, the strange creatures, the sword fights and even the strange cultures. Conan readers, pick this one up, it is likely as close as we are going to get.

I also want to make an honorable mention this week for Black Cat. The two issues, though not related, reflect on the characters past history and relationships and still involve crime. There is even a reference banner in the annual, which is a tool new writers seem to have forgotten about.

  • Daredevil #16
  • Black Cat Annual #1 (Wedding of Spider-man)
  • Wolverine #4
  • Jessica Jones Blind Spot #4
  • A Man Among Ye #2
  • Cimmerian Red Nails #1
  • Green Hornet #1
  • Black Cat #8
  • Alienated #4
  • Death of Nancy Drew #3
  • Avengers of the Wasteland #5

This week is a little short but the latest store fixture move has increased visibility so the extra hours were worth it.

Though the list is short, We Only Find Them When They Are Dead #1 turned out to be a book with potential. The first issue is the standard space vermin cutting up material for profit, but the family legacy detail is a well placed emotional thread. We have been short science fiction books lately and I am glad to see one start up that has a subplot. Though first prints sold out, in three weeks we will have the second prints. I would not jump on this as a speculation book, it is not that kind of thing, but it was good enough to read.

  1. NInjas & Robots #1
  2. A Man Among Ye #1
  3. It Eats What Feeds It #1
  4. Sabrina Something Wicked #1
  5. Spy Island #1
  6. We Only Find Them When They Are Dead #1
  7. Inkblot #1
  8. Jessica Jones Blind Spot #3
  9. Count Crawley #4
