Sorry this one is late, as you all may know, the Previews gets a large part of my attention at the end of each month.
Marvel Team Up #4 was picked as a must read simply for re-uniting Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan. The story features the return of Mar-Vell but it really was a vehicle for additional relationship definition between mentor and student. I look forward to the next piece of the story.
Criminal #6 Teeg Lawless continues to play the edges. The story continues from the events of issue 5 and we see Teeg fall in love with a very dangerous woman. This is the second of four parts to the story, so you may want to grab issue #5 and #6. These are well written and have a good detective feel complete with crime, pain and as always, a woman.
Valkyrie #1 really just continued where the War of the Realms story left off. The Omega issue gave us Jane Foster’s transition to Valkyrie but this issue wrapped up the details nicely. I enjoyed the Thor Goddess of Thunder run and I feel this title is going to continue that very cool story.
Skyward has ended. I enjoyed the entire thing, I looked forward to each issue and hated to wait for the next one. I hope this team starts a new book with the same visual and story focus that Skyward did.
Today at the San Diego Comic Convention (AKA SDCC) the Eisner Awards will be held. For those of you who do not know, the Eisner Awards are basically the American comic book industry’s version of the Academy Awards.
Here’s how it works: The nominations in each category are generated by a five or six member panel. These are then sent to comic book professionals via Diamond Comic Distributors for comic book professionals to vote on. (Most comic book store owners participate, including Jesse.) At this point, any of us can write in a nominee, if they do not appear.
The votes are then turned in and the judges decide who wins each category. There are 6 individuals on the jury, one comic book retailer (not me), one person from the literary field, one actual librarian, one academic research person and 2 experts from the comic field (these two can be a creator, editor and so on).
Before the winners are announced, I thought I would share the votes cast on behalf of those who sponsor Modern Age Comics, yourselves. These nominations come from notes I have made throughout the many discussions held at the counter or during the Saturday morning discussion group. I fill out the ballot each year and that is how we as customers speak to the judges. We did not vote on all categories as in some cases we simply would be blindly selecting a winner and we do not do that here.
So here they are, our nominees this year. The names in blue were written in by us, as our choice, rather than us selecting from the original nominees.
Short list this week as we prepare for a large collection to enter the store. The hours have to come from somewhere.
Luck Number Seven. Both highlighted issues this week are the seventh in their respective series. They are joined this week by two youth books which we have begun adding to the store. They are highlighted in red below. We will include these each week whenever possible and encourage you to check them out on the counter display near the register.
Firefly is just too few pages. Each issue I feel I need just a little bit more than the pages have. Mal and Zoe are now parted by fate, each working there angle to try and resolve the issues at hand. It is nice to see a writer run parallel stories which you can tell will end up with a moment of heartfelt joy once they converge again. I look forward to issue 8.
Daredevil was interesting this issue. The previous arc was simply amazing and the tone for the second has a sound feeling of freedom for Matt, but that lingering desperation by the people of Hell’s Kitchen. I have no doubt I will finish the arc which will likely set a record for my interest in the character. I would put this next to the Kevin Smith Guardian story as far as key points for the character and look forward to what may come next. This book sells out for a reason, if you missed it, order the collected edition and you will not be disappointed.
